ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Virginia Tech Hokies were hoping to avoid their first losing season since 1992 with a win over the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Military Bowl Saturday.
In the first quarter, Bearcats quarterback Gunner Kiel tosses a nice pass to wide out Chris Moore for the 31-yard touchdown, giving the Bearcats an early 7-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, Tech’s J.C. Coleman scores untouched from a yard out--part of a 157-yard rushing performance by him. And the game is tied at seven.
In the third quarter, with the Hokies leading 13-10, Michael Brewer throws a one-yard touchdown to Ryan Malleck to give Tech a 20-10 lead.
Later in the quarter, Kiel gets nailed in the pocket, losing the football. It is scooped up by the former Benendictine standout Nigel Williams, but then he gets stripped. Greg Stroman is there to recover the ball for the Hokies and he carries the ball and a couple of Bearcats with him to the end zone for the touchdown, bringing the score to 27-10 Virginia Tech.
The final outcome, Virginia Tech continues their streak, avoiding a losing season with a 33-17 win.
