CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- L.C. Bird High School defeated Tuscarora High School 22-19 Saturday in Charlottesville to win the Group 5A state football title. The win gave the Skyhawks their third straight state championship.
"The kids fought hard to do what they did today against that football team," head coach Dave Bedwell said. "This is my third time and I'm just as flabbergasted at this time as I was the first time.
For seniors like Tyler Wilkins, winning the state title has become the norm. Still, the wide receiver remained humble after the win.
"It feels amazing to tell you the truth. I'm just grateful that I grew up in the area that I grew up in," Wilkins said. "I'm grateful for everybody, my teammates, fan support, the community, my mother, my coaches, I thank everybody."
Bedwell said he planned to enjoy this season's win before talking about the possibility of a four-peat.
"Don't even call it a dynasty," he said. "It's just a bunch of hard-working kids that believed in everything that we told them."
