Smash-and-grab thieves strike in Henrico this time, steal valuables

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Under the lights at Dorey Park there was plenty of off-the-field drama that dominated the conversation.

"You shouldn't have to babysit your car when you come here for your kids,” said Bianca Harris, who was watching her son play ball Wednesday. “If my car is locked and left that way, it should be like that when I get back; it bothers me."

Police say multiple windows were smashed out in the parking lot in Henrico's East End.  They say the cases are linked to nearly a dozen others in Chesterfield County where thieves are targeting busy moms at daycares and beauty salons.

"If parents are out watching their kids, they shouldn't have to worry about someone doing something to their car,” said Jabria Cox. "It's horrible."

Police say it didn't take the crooks very long to shatter the windows, reach inside, grab valuables and run.  They’re asking parents to make doubly sure to secure their belongings.

Cox says she's not going to give anyone the opportunity to fumble through what's hers.  She says it's an extra step but every time she leaves the car, everything must come with her.

"My wallet, my keys, I'll just put them in the diaper bag because I have a little one and that diaper bag has to go with me," Cox said.

Police say shortly after the thefts from Dorey Park, the thieves were using the stolen credit cards on electronics and food at nearby stores.
