One daughter’s actions had a profound impact on her CEO father.
All it took was a note from his 10-year-old daughter to make him quit his multi-million dollar job.
Mohamed El-Erian, who headed up the investment firm Pimco, posted in an essay on Worth.com that he have up his job after complaining that his daughter was brushing off his instructions to do things. After asking his daughter multiple times to do things, she walked back and presented her father with a note.
The piece of paper contained a list of more than 20 important events and activities he had missed because of his high-profile job. They included everything from her first day of school, to a Halloween parade and even her first soccer match.
That’s when El-Erian said he realized his job was hurting his relationship with his daughter and he had to make a change.
“As much as I could rationalize it — as I had rationalized it — my work-life balance had gotten way out of whack, and the imbalance was hurting my very special relationship with my daughter,” El-Erian wrote. “I was not making nearly enough time for her.”
As a result, El-Erian said he now makes his daughter breakfast and drives her to school since he works several part-time jobs.
