RICHMOND, Va. — A lot of concerned CBS 6 viewers contacted the station Sunday, as the smell of natural gas flooded Shockoe Bottom.
A fire department spokesman told CBS 6 that the smell was coming from a private company, and it would have been from the area where there is landfill water runoff. Yesterday the fire department told CBS 6 they assisted to help reduce the smell.
The source was likely from a dry storm water system, explaining why calls were also made from Whitcomb Court area.
No natural gas leaks were confirmed.
The fire department assisted by hosing down the area, saying that an aroma can be detected when that storm system dries.
The smell lessened by Monday; between Sunday’s efforts and Monday’s rain, the stink has dissipated.
