MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. -- Police are investigating the shooting death of a recently retired Virginia State Police Master Trooper, found dead in Mathews County on Tuesday, August 5.
Emergency officials received calls at 1:30 p.m. about a gunshot victim in the 180 block of Ballast Point Road, in the Hudgins community. When they arrived, they found retired Master Trooper T.E. Hudson dead inside a camper on the property.
Police said the 53-year-old was working as a part-time deputy with the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office. He had only recently retired from the Virginia State Police.
Officials said Hudson retired on Jan. 1, 2014, from the Virginia State Police after 26 years of service. The trooper has been assigned to Area 33, which is part of the Chesapeake Division and includes Mathews and Middlesex counties.
Hudson’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond for an autopsy.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Chesapeake Field Office is conducting the ongoing investigation. The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
