James Mackey, Eriq Benson, Cory Baytop and Charles Zollicoffer are all facing charges of hazing and involuntary manslaughter.
In April of last year police say seven male students tried to cross the Appomattox River as part of a hazing ritual for a non-university sanctioned group.
College students Marvell Edmonson and Jauwan Holmes drowned.
The four suspects were arrested a few days later.
One reason this case has taken so long is that one of the suspects was in a car crash and is unable to go to court.
Their trial now begins October 9.
