WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Marine Corps veteran whose incredible courage saved a fellow Marine will receive the nation’s highest military honor Thursday. President Obama will present the Medal of Honor to William “Kyle” Carpenter.
In November 2010, Carpenter jumped on a live grenade during a firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Carpenter lost his right eye, most of his jaw and suffered a collapsed lung. He was briefly declared dead by medics, but he somehow survived.
Carpenter is now a student at the University of South Carolina.
