PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) - Interstate 85 south reopened in Petersburg early Wednesday morning after Virginia State Police conducted a death investigation near Squirrel Level Road. Police responded to I-85 about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday to investigate reports of a man lying down in the travel lane.

In an email late Wednesday, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Molnar said a witness reported seeing a dark in color, possibly grey sedan, that was stopped on the right shoulder of the roadway. When troopers arrived on scene, that vehicle did not stay at the scene.

If this vehicle is involved in the hit-and-run crash, there should be damage to the vehicles front end," Molnar wrote.

The victim's body, which was struck by several vehicles, was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine cause and manner of death.

The man's identify has not yet been released.

State police are continuing to investigate the incident as an apparent suicide and hit-and-run.

I-85 was closed in the area from approximately 11 p.m. to 5:20 a.m.
