CHESTER, Va. (WTVR) --A woman was killed in an early morning fire Saturday in the Chesterfield Downs neighborhood of Chesterfield County.

Fire crews were called to the 400 block of Derby Creek Lane, in the Enon area, around 5:45 a.m.

Three people were inside the home when the fire started. Two managed to escape. Fire officials later discovered a woman's body inside the home.

Fire crews struggled to put the fire out because of ice and freezing temperatures, the fire's extreme heat and the roof which had partially collapsed.

Derby Creek Lane was shut down for several hours while fire crews knocked down the flames.

Stunned family and neighbors at the scene said they were heartbroken.

"I could just hear the popping.  So, I didn't know what it was,” said concerned neighbor Paul Medley. "The neighbors were calling to see if we could find the people that live there."

The cause of the Saturday morning house fire remains under investigation.
