RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- Funeral services will be held Saturday for a beloved Central Virginia radio personality.
Family members told CBS 6 News that services for Mitch Malone will be held at Gillfield Baptist Church in Petersburg at 2 p.m. followed by internment at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
Malone died Monday morning of natural causes after a long broadcast career in Richmond.
The Petersburg native graduated from Virginia State University and later served as music and sports director for the university radio station.
He also worked in several other markets, including Greensboro, Baltimore, Norfolk and Raleigh-Durham.
Malone signed on as the overnight DJ at 100.3 FM (WSOJ), which would eventually become KISS FM, in the early 1990s. He hosted the highly rated "Quiet Storm" radio show weeknights from 7 p.m. to midnight.
“Mitch is the voice of the city, not just Richmond but Petersburg,” Jeff Anderson, Operations Manager at Radio One told CBS 6 News on Monday.
Colleagues called Malone the maestro, a radio legend and absolutely meticulous at his craft.
“That voice, that baritone voice of his, as soon as he spoke it commanded attention,” said host Cousin Keith.
