MIDDLESEX COUNTY, Va (WTVR) -- Travis Baker, 34, was officially charged with felony murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony by Judge Cressondra B. Conyers in court Wednesday.
As Judge Conyers spoke to Baker, he suddenly became emotional. The judge continued on, appointing Baker attorney Ryan Decker--who is from outside Middlesex County. [RELATED: Dad admits to murdering mom on son's birthday]
Sources told reporter CBS 6 News' Jerrita Patterson that an outside lawyer was brought in to ensure Baker receives a fair trial since the majority of residents living in the small community, including lawyers, have ties to either the victim or the suspect.
Baker is behind bars charged with shooting and killing his girlfriend Wendy Billups Sunday afternoon. Detectives said the shooting happened after Baker went to see his two children on his son's birthday, but was asked to leave Billup's home. Baker allegedly told investigators he "snapped" and shot her in the head.
Baker is set to appear in court next on Nov. 13, but his lawyer may request a bond hearing before then.
