RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A contract has been awarded to a company to dredge 90 miles of the James River.

Cottrell Contracting Corp. of Chesapeake won the bid to widen and deepen the James starting from the mouth of the river into Richmond.

The dredging will remove sandbars so large ships can make their way to ports in Richmond and Hopewell.

The project will take three years to complete.
