NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WTVR) – A Virginia-based Navy sailor is charged with felony animal cruelty after a dog was found stabbed to death in the man's Newport News home over the weekend.

The dog, a 10-month-old German Shepard/Golden Retriever mix named Zoey,  suffered multiple stabs wounds, investigators told WTKR.com.

Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Joseph C. Justesen. He is a Petty Officer Third Class, assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln, according to a Navy spokesperson.

Justesen's roommate had been taking care of the puppy for a friend. Zoey’s owner said her dog was well-behaved and she is now left trying to understand how this could happen to her sweet puppy who loved everyone.
