(CNN) — California Attorney General Kamala Harris began marrying same-sex couples in San Francisco City Hall on Friday, two days after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for the marriages.
The first couple to be married Friday was Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, a lesbian couple together since 1997 who were plaintiffs in the lawsuit before the nation’s highest court.
Stier held a bouquet of white roses during the ceremony.
Perry wore a pants suit and Stier a dress.
