Preparing for Mother Nature’s unpredictability

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) - Those in Central Virginia and across the Commonwealth need to be on high alert Thursday for the threat of severe weather.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) remains on standby should the storm do damage.

The potential for flash flooding is a concern when you consider the area has already been heavily saturated from recent rain. A lot of focus is still centered around severe wind gusts, potentially leading to a domino effect with tree damage, power outages and property damage.

VDEM recommends you stay informed and prepared for emergencies. That includes having supplies on hand.

"Make sure you have your plan," Bob Spieldenner with VDEM said.  "Talk about what you would do in any type of an emergency. If you couldn't get home how would you stay in touch with your family? If cell phone lines were overwhelmed or damaged, how are you going to stay in contact with each other?  This is a time to go through that planning process, talk to your family about it and make sure you have your emergency supplies.  And definitely this time of year pay attention to the weather forecast."
