MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (CNN) – The U.S. Coast Guard announced it seized thousands of pounds of marijuana during a patrol of the Caribbean last month. The seized pot was worth about $3.5 million, officials said.
“It’s not getting to the streets of Miami or getting to the streets of Florida, I think it’s extremely great, extremely advantageous for the kids,” Mario Gil, with the U.S. Coast Guard, said. “I’m actually from a South Florida community and I’m excited the drugs don’t make it here.”
The bales of pot were marked as a “sugar product from Jamaica,” officials said. They have not yet said who tried to smuggle the drugs into the country.
