PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Police continue their investigation after a 17-month-old was found dead, and a 2-month-old found in critical condition.
Prince George County Police have determined the cause of death had nothing to do with the apartment or the building, after firefighters used special equipment to test air quality.
The child's 22-year-old mother called 911 just before 6 p.m. on Sunday. She said her oldest child was in the bedroom and unresponsive at Bailey Ridge Apartments.
Police arrived and started CPR.
When the emergency crews arrived, they pronounced the 17-month-old dead and said the 2-month-old infant was "experiencing problems." The baby girl was rushed to VCU Medical Center where she remains on a ventilator listed in critical condition.
Police said they have questioned the mother and her roommate. Neighbors said the mother could often be seen with her two children, taking them in and out of the apartment.
Police said they have no record of ever being called to the apartment.
Investigators have been in contact with the Commonwealth's Attorney about the case.
An autopsy is expected to reveal more details in the case. No charges have been filed in the case.
