UPDATE: VCU checkpoints cancelled

UPDATE: Because of the likelihood of severe weather, tonight’s scheduled checkpoint by VCU Police has been cancelled. We will notify you promptly when and if it is rescheduled.

(WTVR) – VCU police are holding a checkpoint tonight on the lookout for distracted drivers. The checkpoint is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. along the 700 block of West Franklin Street.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said last year 3,092 people were killed and an estimated 416,000 people were injured in car crashes because of a distracted driver.

Common distractions including texting, eating and adjusting a radio.

They consider texting to be the most dangerous distraction creating a risk of crashing that’s 23 times higher than driving while not distracted.
