ALBEMARLE COUNTY Va. – It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week. This year’s theme is “We’re all in this together”. In Albemarle County, State Department of Transportation workers are being recognized.
A vigil took place Tuesday for workers killed in roadway work zones. One of the people honored, was 47-year-old Carlos Keen. He died last year after a tractor trailer hit the backhoe he was driving. It happened on US 460. Keen’s family and friends attended the memorial along I64.
The U.S. Department of Transportation reports, the latest data available says – in 2011, 587 people were killed in highway work zone accidents.
