ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – The Albemarle County Police Department is investigating two fatal crashes that occurred on Friday.
The first crash happened just before 4 p.m. when a GMC pickup truck crossed the line and collided head on with a Chevrolet Malibu near the intersection of Irish Road and Paces Store Road.
Andrew C. Lawhorne, 26, the driver of the Malibu, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, Jerry C. Johnson, 47, was flown to U. Va. Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Johnson was arrested for a D.U.I. Additional charges are pending.
The second crash happened at 7:48 p.m. at the intersection of Rockfish Gap Turnpike and Brownsville Road. Carroll D. Herring, 77, was struck by two vehicles when he was crossing the road. One vehicle escaped from the scene. The other vehicle tried to escape, but was stopped by police. Charges are pending against the driver.
The Crash Reconstruction Team is asking for the public’s help to locate the other vehicle. Police say it’s a white Saab with moderate front end damage. If anyone has any information regarding the crash, please call Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.
