PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Wilmington, North Carolina resident is facing several charges following a crash on Interstate 295 southbound at the 7 mile marker in Prince George County.
Saturday morning, Virginia State Police were called to the scene of the crash after the driver of a 2012 Dodge Avenger fled from a traffic stop that was initiated by the City of Hopewell Sheriff’s Office.
Police tell us a deputy had stopped the driver for reckless driving 82 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone. After stopping the vehicle, the driver drove away at a high rate of speed but the deputy did not pursue the suspect vehicle.
A short time later, the suspect vehicle crashed at the 7 mile marker after running off the right side of the roadway and striking the guardrail. The Dodge come back into the travel lanes where it struck a tractor-trailer causing the Dodge to catch fire.
The driver of the Dodge then fled on foot. The driver has been identified as Keisha N. Harrell, 42.
Harrell was charged with felony hit and run and possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute. Harrell was also charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice, not having a drivers license, and reckless driving – failure to maintain proper control.
There were no injuries in the crash. The investigation remains on-going.
