Although winds decreased slightly overnight, wind gusts will increase for much of today.
Many areas will see occasional gusts over 25 mph. The Northern Neck & Middle Peninsula, plus northern Virginia and areas west of Farmville, are under a wind advisory for occasional gusts over 45 mph.
Some of the higher elevations in western Virginia could see some gusts exceeding 50 mph. A high wind warning is in effect for those locations.
The reason why the winds are so gusty is because we are stuck between a big storm and an area of high pressure. There is a huge difference in terms of the barometer readings, so the way nature deals with that is by producing wind.
As the low and high move apart from each other, winds will gradually decrease this evening, and turn much calmer for tonight & Sunday.
