Several area high school football teams will play for state titles next week.
L.C. Bird will go for their first ever Division 6 State title after beating Oakton 41-17. Skyhawks running back Paul Robertson ran for a playoff record 426 yards along with five touchdowns in the win.
Hanover's season came to an end Saturday as they fell to Stone Bridge 28-21 in the Division 5 State semifinal. Hawks quarterback Sam Rogers, playing his final game, accounted for all three touchdowns in the loss.
Goochland and Essex will meet each other in the Division 2 Final. The Bulldogs beat Wilson Memorial 35-0 in a rematch of last year's semifinal, won by Goochland.
Essex beat John Battle 40-9. Trojans quarterback Dominek Broaddus threw for four touchdowns in the first half.
In College Basketball, VCU won at home over Belmont 75-65. Four Rams were in double figures led by Treveon Graham's 19 points.
Richmond remained undefeated at home with a 62-60 win over Wake Forest. Spiders forward Derrick Williams scored a career high 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Virginia Tech improved to 7-0 on the season with a 81-71 win over 19th ranked Oklahoma St. Senior Erick Green scored a game high 28 points in the win.
And UVA picked up a 67-51 win over Green Bay to improved to 6-2 on the season.
