Virginia Aquarium unable to accept new animals

Virginia Beach, VA – You may see fewer animals when you visit the Virginia Aquarium.

The facility recently tried to buy a new river otter from out of state, but Virginia’s Department of Game and Inland Fisheries blocked the deal. It was able to do so through a strict interpretation of an old state law that prohibits the selling or possession of wild animals.

The move will impact more than just otters. Aquarium curators say right now they can’t accept any animals from out of state. They also cannot offer any other animals to out-of-state aquariums.
