For Week Two of “Battleground Virginia” we heard from the chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party, Brian Moran, about what President Obama needs to carry Virginia again. In 2008 he was the first Democrat since Lyndon Johnson to carry the state, and Moran reiterated the state’s importance to both campaigns. He also discussed the impact of the loss of the Governorship in 2009 and the Senate in 2011 and whether those events might complicate the president’s efforts here. He also suggested the president’s policies were at least partly responsible for Virginia’s relatively low – compared to other Southeastern states – unemployment rate. Finally, he says we can afford to tackle healthcare through the Medicaid expansion and Medicare savings in the Affordable Care Act.
