PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WTKR) – Officials said a father discovered his five-month-old baby dead inside a minivan outside a daycare in Portsmouth Friday afternoon.

Sharon Salyer, who saw the discovery and tried to help, said the man was in shock.

“The first thing I heard was a man just crying out ‘Oh my baby, my baby,’” said Salyer.

Witnesses told WTKR-TV that the father said the minivan had been in the daycare parking lot for five hours.

Salyer said the man was calling out for help and asking of anyone knew CPR. She said she performed CPR on the baby, but knew it was too late.

“I took the baby from him and turned the baby around, and I knew that the baby was dead,” Salyer said. “The baby’s eyes were open and the baby’s skin was ice blue– just nearly the color of his eyes -- just this little face.”

The baby died in the Children’s Harbor Day Care parking lot, but officials said the child was never under their care.

When police and EMS crews arrived, medics pronounced the baby dead.
