HENRICO, Va. (WTVR) - Henrico County school leaders said Friday they have identified the student accused of placing a noose in a tree outside Varina High School.

School officials said the student faces serious disciplinary action and could be expelled. Henrico police have said they will seek criminal charges against the student. [RELATED: Noose on school property unnerves Varina]

Mychael Dickerson, a Henrico County Public Schools spokesperson, said because of student confidentiality laws, additional information about the incident cannot be released.

However, Dickerson commended students, staff and police for their help during the investigation in order to "bring this offensive incident to a close."

A parent spotted the noose hanging from a tree outside the school while attending an event at the school Wednesday night -- and posted a picture of it on Twitter. School administrators and police were alerted shortly after.
