HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Henrico County will lengthen the school day for elementary students by 15 minutes starting next school year.

The School Board voted unanimously Thursday to approve the changes, in response to requests from teachers for more planning time, and to help bus drives adhere to their schedules.

The plan will extend the day for the county's 45 elementary schools and the nearly 23,000 elementary students to six hours and 30 minutes.

The plan will also shorten the day for middle school students by 10 minutes and high school student's day by five minutes.

The school system surveyed parents and teachers about the change. Of the 3,631 responses, 74.9 percent agreed with the proposal.
