RICHMOND, Va. -- Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU is known for their exceptional care and once again the hospital is being recognized on a national level.

Dr. Matt Schefft, Associate Chief Quality and Safety Officer with CHoR answers these questions about being named one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic as well as being ranked as among the best in the country in eight specialties by U.S. News and World Report.

Here are those specialties:

What do the rankings mean for patients and their families?

These rankings are tied to safety, to outcomes and the experience of care that our talented teams are providing. It shows the level of care that we're able to provide at Children's Hospital of Richmond and when you compare that expertise, as well as the outcomes with the excellent research that we're doing that's already generating new treatments and saving lives. That's why you see so many of our specialties ranked.

For parents, this means that there is a wealth of information, education and care right in their own backyards. Last year alone, families traveled from 47 states just to come to Richmond to be cared for by our experts here at Children's Hospital of Richmond. But for

our community, right down the street from where you live, you have that expert care families have traveled very far to be a part of.

How are the rankings determined?

U.S. News & World Report uses a research firm that analyzes data from 118 children's hospitals across the country. They look at things that impact patient care like outcomes, access to specialty clinics and special resources. When you look at that data, what it means for families in central Virginia who come to CHoR, you're going to get safe, high quality, well-coordinated care that families expect and deserve and the care that’s our mission to provide.

How are you working to serve more patients?

We are humbled that so many families trust us to take care of their children and so many have trusted us, that we know we need more space to care for everyone with the world class care that we've just talked about.

In January, we'll be opening 20 additional neonatal intensive care beds in our level four NICU, which means that we can care for any problem that a premature baby or full-term baby with a critical need has.

In addition, for other children of all ages, we are looking in the next year to expand our inpatient beds so that any child that needs us, we are there to serve them.
