MIDDLESEX COUNTY, Va. -- State police have released the names of two people killed in a fiery wreck involving a tractor-trailer early Saturday morning in Middlesex County.
Troopers were called to the two-vehicle crash on Route 17, about one mile south of Briary Swamp Road, just after 3:30 a.m.
A Volkswagen convertible was headed northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 17 when the driver collided head-on with a tractor-trailer, according to a preliminary investigation from state police.
"Upon impact the tractor trailer ran off the roadway into the ditch, tipping over onto its side and spilling over 70 gallons of diesel fuel," Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said.
Troopers said the driver, 22-year-old Amberly Joy Wingfield, of Linden Avenue in Urbanna, and passenger, 25-year-old Bradley Carlton Wingfield, of Dirt Bridge Road in Topping, were killed on impact.
There was no word on the condition of the semi driver at last check Saturday.
Troopers said their investigation into the wreck is ongoing.
