AMHERST COUNTY, Va. -- A Virginia man was killed after a recliner fell from the bed of the pickup truck and caused a chain reaction crash.

The crash was reported Monday afternoon along the Carter Glass Memorial Bridge, Route 29, in Amherst County.

"A Chevrolet S10 pickup truck was traveling in the southbound lane. A recliner it was hauling fell from the bed of the pickup truck and into the southbound travel lane," an email from a Virginia State Police spokesperson wrote in an email. "A sedan and a tractor-trailer were traveling behind the pickup truck, respectively. The sedan braked suddenly but was unable to avoid striking the recliner. The tractor-trailer was unable to stop in time and struck the sedan."

Richard E. Dalton, 44, of Monroe, Va., was driving the sedan and died at the scene.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
