RICHMOND, Va. -- A post on social media has prompted an "incredible response" for needy pets in Central Virginia.

Richmond Animal League (RAL) opened a pet pantry for animal owners who may have fallen on hard times.

The group posted on social media last week that they were down to just a few bags of dog and cat food.

"Amazon, UPS, and the USPS have delivered of 250 boxes of donated food to RAL," Richmond Animal League Director of Development Kaicee Robertson said. "Just a few minutes ago, the USPS post master arrived at RAL and said, 'We have pallets and pallets of boxes for you.'"

Robertson said pets will be able to remain in their homes with full bellies thanks to "incredibly kind and generous donors and supporters."

The group wants to make sure no one is forced to surrender their pets because they are unable to pay for their food during the economic crisis.

RAL's panty is open 24-7 at their North Chesterfield location on International Drive.
