RICHMOND, Va. -- A group of Richmond high school students are using Rubik's Cubes to raise money to help battle COVID-19.

John Staley, Ryland Wilson and Jacob Lee, who attend Maggie Walker Governor's School, created the Cube to Cure online competition and fundraiser.

"I was really thinking, how can I do more than just sit here everyday and sleep in, which is fun but not very fulfilling," Wilson said.

More than 100 competitors from up to ten countries took part in various online competitions trying to solve Rubik's Cubes as quickly as possible during Cube to Cure.

Proceeds were donated to Heart to Heart International, a healthcare organization assisting with COVID-19 relief across the globe.

Staley said that the completion brings people together virtually during at time many feel disconnected while quarantining.

"It was just something that we thought of that we thought could potentially make a big difference," Lee said. "And hopefully it does."

Ryland, who is apparently the fastest cuber of the trio, said Cube to Cure has raised more than $1,000.

The group is also selling face masks adorned with a Rubik's Cube pattern that will also benefit Heart to Heart International.
