blog-1 RICHMOND, Va. — The autumnal equinox occurs this year on Thursday, September 22 at 10:21 a.m.  This is when the direct rays of the sun are over the equator, and there are roughly equal hours of light and dark.

The sun’s direct rays were in the northern hemisphere during the summer, and will then travel into the southern hemisphere as we approach winter.

While the first few days of astronomical fall will have above-normal temperatures, cooler air will return Sunday into early next week.
