Candace Burns surprises Henrico woman who lost all her food in storm

RICHMOND, Va. -- Many people in Central Virginia are still recovering after strong storms hit more than a week ago.

A CBS 6 viewer was left in a desperate situation after the storm, so we decided to pay her a visit.

Kathi Marks, a Henrico resident, was without electricity for four long days, like many people in the neighborhood.

All the food she had purchased went bad, and she had just gone grocery shopping.

Kathi has a disability and it’s hard for her to get around, so she shops in bulk.

Not only was she without food, she was without money to buy any groceries.

“I have no more food stamps,” Marks said.

The Red Cross couldn’t help her, she said, and the Department of Social Services told her to submit a form to them via mail.

“You know the mail will take a week to get here and two weeks later, I’ll get the information,” she said.

As part of the CBS 6 Gives monthly program, sponsored with help from Union Bank, we wanted to help Ms. Marks get some food.

Candace Burns stopped back by Ms. Marks’ home with some good news.

“So, what if I told you that your story touched our hearts, so we went out and we got you a Walmart gift card for $250?”

“Oh my, I don’t know whether to cry or not… God bless you all at Channel 6.” “Can I give you a hug, is that professional?”
