Two children found dead in California storage unit

(CNN) — Two people already charged with felony child abuse, torture and mayhem could also face murder charges after two children were found dead in a northern California storage unit, police in the city of Redding said.

The bodies were discovered while authorities investigated the abuse of a third child, Lt. Pete Brindley said Tuesday.

The deceased children were siblings who were 3 and 5 years old, according to CNN affiliate KSBW.

The third child is undergoing surgery at a hospital in Sacramento, Brindley said.

Tami Joy Huntsman, 39, and Gonzalo Curiel, 17, both of Quincy in Plumas County, are being held in the Plumas County Jail, he said.

The relationship of the children to Huntsman and Curiel is unknown right now, Brindley said, but autopsy results are expected soon.

Friday night, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Department received a call that there was a possible case of child abuse or neglect in Quincy, Brindley said. When deputies arrived, they found a child who was badly injured. Huntsman and Curiel were arrested, and Plumas investigators later informed Redding police that there could be two children in a storage space in their jurisdiction.

Patrol officers responded immediately to the location, found the storage unit and, because lives were at stake, busted the lock on the door, Brindley said. He declined to give details about the scene investigators found when they opened the unit.
