ESSEX COUNTY, Va. — Severe weather prompted tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings for several counties in the Northern Neck Thursday evening.
Tornado warnings were issued for Essex, Lancaster, Middlesex and Richmond counties. Once the warnings expired at 10:15 p.m, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Lancaster, Mathews and Middlesex counties until 11 p.m.
WTVR CBS 6 viewers captured the power of the storm as it rolled across the rural landscape.
One viewer captured this photo around 9 p.m. The CBS 6 Weather Authority says the photo shows a “tail cloud” or an extension of wind flowing into the wall cloud of a storm.
“You see them quite often with tornadic supercells, but they are not tornadoes,” CBS 6 Chief Meteorologist Zach Daniel said. “They are tapered clouds formed from the condensed moisture from inflow into a storm.”
Susan Bundy said a friend who grew up in Tappahannock sent her the above photo of the storm moving across the Rappahannock River.
Jessica Jones said she snapped this photo just before the storm rolled through Kilmarnock.
David Benson sent this photo of lightning in White Chapel.
Michaela Baker sent in this photo from Warsaw of what he described as “crazy lightning.”
