PEARLAND, Texas — Police arrested a Texas woman on Mother’s Day for the deaths of her 15-month-old twin daughters. Barbara Ramirez-Sifuentes was charged with two counts of manslaughter after she was accused of leaving her children in the bathtub while she cleaned and listened to music in another room, according to a report on ABC13.com.
The Texas television news station obtained exclusive video of officers as they arrested Ramirez-Sifuentes. The most shocking part of the video was the fact it appeared Ramirez-Sifuentes smiled broadly as police led her away in handcuffs.
Friends of Ramirez-Sifuentes called what happened to the children a horrible accident. Her lawyer said he did not believe the 21-year-old woman should have been arrested at all.
“They’re saying she was reckless by leaving the children in the bath,” attorney Stan Schneider said. “The family’s been grieving, and this is Mother’s Day. It’s just a horrible accident. And this is what happens sometimes when accidents occur.”
Ramirez-Sifuentes is free on bond and planned to plead not guilty to the charges, her lawyer said.
