WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sportscaster Greg Anthony has been charged with solicitation of prostitution in Washington, a lieutenant for the District of Columbia police said.
Anthony, who works for Turner Sports as a basketball analyst, released a statement Saturday saying he made a “mistake.”
“I apologize to my colleagues and business partners, but most of all to my wife and my family,” he said in a written statement. “With this lapse of judgment, I embarrassed many, including myself. I will work to regain the trust that I have lost and the first step is saying that I am sorry.”
Anthony, 47, was arrested Friday evening on Rhode Island Avenue in the nation’s capital, police Lt. Kelvin Cusick said. Cusick didn’t give any further details as to where or how police arrested Anthony. He was released later Friday.
Anthony also works for CBS, which suspended him indefinitely after the arrest. He had been scheduled to broadcast a game in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday. His biography on the CBS Sports website appeared to be taken down by Saturday afternoon.
The former NBA guard, who also has appeared on CNN as a sports analyst and a political commentator, won’t appear on Turner Sports or NBA TV for the rest of this season.
“Greg Anthony has been suspended indefinitely and we will have no further comment at this time,” Turner Sports said in a statement. Turner Sports is part of Turner Broadcasting, which also includes CNN.
Before his 12-year professional career, Anthony played for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on its 1990 NCAA championship team.
