SAN DIEGO, Calif.  -- More than 400 Marines graduated from the Marine Corps depot on Saturday. Among them -- a bulldog named Smedley.

Smedley Butler -- only a few months old -- is the next English bulldog Marine mascot. It's part of a tradition that dates back to the 1930s.

"He's good with the band, he's good with the marines, he's ready to go," said Gunnery Sergeant Jennifer Antoine.

His handler, Corporal Tyler Viglione, said he's proud of Smedley.

"He's 37 pounds now," said Viglione.

According to news reports, Smedley's responsibilities will include participating the base's family days and other public events.
