UPDATE: “The preliminary investigation indicates that the seven year old was playing at a neighbor’s residence with his 12-year old brother,” Franklin County Sheriff’s Lt. Philip Young wrote in an email. “The 12-year-old found a handgun and accidentally discharged the firearm, striking and instantly killing the seven year old.”
Young called the investigation “ongoing” and said no charges have been filed.
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WTVR) — An investigation is underway after a 7-year-old boy was shot and killed in Franklin County Monday morning.
WDBJ reports that sheriff’s deputieswere dispatched just before noon for a shooting call on Double Oaks Lane.
“Deputies arrived on the scene a few minutes later and found a seven year old male, with a gunshot wound, lying on the floor of the residence,” Franklin County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a news release. “The juvenile was later pronounced dead at the scene.”
Deputies, who secured the scene and obtained a search warrant, said their investigation is ongoing
No charges had been filed as of Monday night.
