Antoinette’s Weekend Picks: Country on Mayo, Festival of the Grape and more

Mayo Island Re-opens Saturday, October 19th with “Country on Mayo”, all day Family Entertainment and Country Music on Mayo Island, 501 South 14th Street. The Concert features Country Music Stars Brett Eldredge, Angie Johnson, Old Dominion, Ross Coppley, Hailey and Michaels, Brittany & Payton Johnson, 12:30 – 8:30 p.m., gates will open at noon. There’s food, beer trucks, video game trailer, gold tickets  $25, general admission $15, parking on the island as well as off site parking with Richmond Trolley providing service to the concert, Country on Mayo is one of a series of concerts to come next year, details www.mayoisland.net.

The 11th annual Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape is only a few days away. It’s held in Powhatan’s Historic Courthouse Square, Saturday, October 19, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year’s festival features over 30 different Virginia Wineries, 100 local artists and craftspeople, music provided by Casper and Steve Bassett & Fat Ammons with the Mystic Soul Bubbas, there are 14 food vendors on site and new this year Virginia Craft Beers. Advance tickets are $25, and will be $30 at the gate, for non-tasters it’s $20. get details at www.PowhatanWineFestival.com.

The 7th Annual Pink Tie Gala, Saturday, October 19 from 7:30pm to 12:30 a.m. is a night of dancing to live music, delicious food, Silent Auctions and the Celebration of Life Dance Team, honoring Survivors. The event is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness is at  the Greater Richmond Convention Center, tickets are $85 in advance with 100% of the net proceeds going to the Central Virginia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Silent Auction items include Waterfall resort Alaska Sportfishing Package, Argentina Dove Hunt for 5 people, a one week stay at the Sanctuary Resort and Spa in Costa Rica,  and many more items. Annual Celtic Fest and the Highland Games, at Richmond International Raceway Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. both days, $20 per ticket, watch big men throw things like telephone poles, hurling, Celtic dancing, a Celtic market, a British car show, a harp competition, blacksmiths, rugby, bagpipe and drum competitions and music from Irish bands Seven Nations and Handsome Molly. Over 50 clans and 60 vendors.  $15 per day, $25 for the weekend in advance; $20 per day, $30 for the weekend at the gates. $5 extra for pets. Details www.vacelticfestival.com.

45th annual Richmond Oktoberfest, Friday & Saturday, October 18 & 19, 5 -11 p.m., new location, The Old Dominion Building at Richmond International Raceway Complex, a weekend to celebrate German culture, German foods, music, dancing, tickets at the door $10, free for children 15 and under, details www.RichmondOktoberfestInc.com.

“The Great Gatsby Affair”, Fall Fashion Showby The Fashion Media Arts Council of America, will take you back to the fashions of the roaring 20’s – The Jazz Age of Fashion. The Great Gatsby Affair is Friday, October 18, doors will open at 7:30pm at Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa, 12042 West Broad Street in Short Pump. Henrico County 30th annual Harvest Festival, Saturday, October 19 from noon – 4 p.m., at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park, 3400 Mountain Road in Glen Allen. The event is free, lots of hands on activities and demonstrations, cider making, candle dipping, corn shelling, other family activities include a petting zoo, pony rides, pig races and more.
