NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – The 27-year-old man who apparently committed suicide from the Henpeck Road overpass in New Kent Tuesday was struck by a tractor-trailer and other vehicles on Interstate 64, according to Virginia State Police.
Police said the 27-year-old Norfolk man who died was driving a family member’s van when it ran out of gas and came to a stop along Interstate 64 west about 1:30 a.m. Shortly thereafter police said it appeared the man committed suicide.
Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer that struck the man did stop at the scene, but did not stay there. Police tracked down the truck driver, identified only as a 54-year-old Richmond man.
Police said once the investigation is complete, they would turn the case over to the New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney to decide if charges should be placed.
Tuesday’s death investigation kept the eastbound lanes of the interstate closed for several hours.
