(CNN) -- Prosecutors in Utah want to charge a teenager as an adult in connection with the death of a soccer referee, the Salt Lake County district attorney's office said Wednesday.
The prosecutors intend to charge the teen with homicide by assault in connection with the May 4 death of 46-year-old referee Ricardo Portillo, the office said. A hearing in the case is scheduled in juvenile court Wednesday afternoon.
The teen is accused of punching Portillo in the face during a match in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville on April 27. Portillo suffered serious head injuries in the attack and died a week later, authorities said.
The district attorney's office said it filed a motion asking the juvenile court to waive its jurisdiction and certify the minor as an adult in the case.
