Bridge collapse derails train; toxic chemical pours into creek

PAULSBORO, NJ (KYW) - Several train cars carrying chemicals fell into the Mantua creek after the bridge it was traveling over collapsed early Friday morning.

According to local news reports, the train cars are leaking vinyl chloride, which is an industrial chemical mainly used in producing PVC. It is highly toxic, flammable and carcinogenic.

Several fire companies and HAZMAT crews have responded. The US Coast Guard is also joining in the efforts.

Paulsboro High School Students have been on lockdown since 7:15 am. Students, staff and faculty have been ordered to the gym to seek shelter.

There has been no word on any injuries at this time.
