NEW YORK (CNN) - A 70-year-old tennis lines umpire in New York preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with killing her 80-year-old husband in California in April, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Lois Ann Goodman was detained by detectives outside a Sheraton hotel and was later charged in the April 17 death in Los Angeles of Alan Goodman. He was beaten with a coffee mug then stabbed to death with its broken shards, authorities said.

Lois Ann Goodman, whose arrest was confirmed by the New York Police Department, was awaiting extradition to Los Angeles, according to the LAPD and the L.A. County District Attorney's office.

Prosecutors say they plan to request $1 million bail.

If convicted, Goodman could face up to life in prison.

The U.S. Tennis Association was not immediately available for comment.

L.A. County District Attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said Goodman did not yet have legal representation, and Goodman was not immediately available for comment.
