UPDATE: Police sources told CBS 6 that foul play is not suspected in this shooting. Additionally, the sources said the shooting did not appear to be accidental.
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WTVR)— Police were contacted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, after an employee discovered a man with a gunshot wound to head, inside the Smoking Gun shooting range, in the 120 block of Boulevard in Colonial Heights.
Sources told CBS 6 that investigators are attempting to determine if it was a suicide attempt or an accidental shooting. They will analyze surveillance footage to determine exactly what happened.
Police sources told CBS 6 that a man dressed in military uniform came and rented a few pistols for target practice. Sources told us that an hour later, the owner and his daughter, the manager, went to tell him they were closing up for the night.
That's when they discovered the man lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head. The owner called 911, and began to administer CPR.
The man was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg. He was pronounced dead around 9 p.m. Wednesday evening.
There are seven lanes at the shooting range, and he was the only one there at the time.
