Man calls 911 after being hit by train in James City County

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WTKR) - A man who was hit by a train in James City County -- and somehow managed to call 911 during the ordeal -- is recovering in the hospital.

Police said they think the 22-year-old had been drinking, was walking down the tracks near Richmond Road and then passed out.

Officials said a dual-engine CSX train hit the victim around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said after the man was run over by the train, he managed to call 911, while the train was still on top of him.

"I'm under a train," the man told a 911 dispatcher. "Yeah, my leg just got run over by a train."

The dispatcher then asks the man if he can still feel his leg.

"Oh my God… it's going numb," the man told the dispatcher.

Investigators believe the train was traveling over 40 m.p.h. when it hit the man, so it took the freight train about three-quarters of a mile to come to a complete  stop.

The man also was not sure where he was, so it took emergency crews around 13 minutes to find him.

The man, who authorities said lost one of his feet, was taken to VCU Medical Center.

The victim is now listed in good condition.
