CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Henrico woman was arrested Friday for embezzling thousands of dollars from a Chesterfield athletic association that raises money for sporting activities for young children.

Members of the Smith Athletic Association tells CBS 6 that Jennifer Harris, a former board treasurer, is charged with four counts of embezzlement.

According to the association’s president, Harris was using their account like it was a line of credit, and that Harris had a debit card in which she’d make purchases and withdrawal cash.

The association says Harris would spend small amounts of money on things such as gas, but those little transactions added up to thousands of dollars.

When an internal audit showed a discrepancy in the bank statements, that’s when Chesterfield Police were called in to investigate.

The Smith Athletic Association believes Harris has been allegedly stealing money from 2009 to 2011 when she served as the board’s treasurer.

Harris is out on bond until her next court hearing on February 9th.
